Bay Area Drawings-1948
A portfolio group of 16 lithographs; 1948; artists include Richard Diebenkorn, George Stillman, James Budd Dixon, John Hultberg, Frank Lobdell and Walter Kuhlman; printed by Eric Ledin of Mill Valley; individually pencil signed on the support sheets or within the image; edition perhaps 50."Drawings" was the result of a collaborative effort by these six artists who were students at the San Francisco Art Institute. The project was conceived as an effort to raise money to assist the Seashore Gallery of Modern Art which supported and exhibited their work. It is thought that Drawings was the first abstract expressionist portfolio done in the U.S. The artists mounted the prints onto an inexpensive paper and they individually signed their prints in pencil on the support sheets. Black construction paper folders were made; they tried to sell them for $1.00 each. The sales were poor, the gallery folded, and the funds were used to purchase tequila for a party. The unsold portfolios were given away, thrown away and generally unceremoniously dispersed. The edition was fewer than 50.The portfolio was originally intended to have seventeen prints. However, John Hultberg drew on the plate with India ink and Ledin managed to print three or four impressions before the image disappeared.
